I first began feeding a raw diet to my performance dogs (Agility, Flyball) in 2000. Before anyone really knew about it and before there were commercially available brands. I would drive to the chicken farms around Calgary, different butcher shops and even to processing facilities to get raw meaty bones, meat and organs for my 3 dogs. I would also buy vegetables and process them myself. Everything was bought in bulk and packaged on the weekend for the week ahead. This was a lot of work! After doing this for two years I got too busy and gave up, started to feed kibble again. Until I got Odin, a beautiful German shepherd puppy. I put him on the best grain free kibble on the market. He had diarrhea for three weeks! The first vet I took him to said that I should put him on a cheaper brand of kibble, one that wasn’t so rich. I didn’t think that made any sense, so I took him to a homeopathic vet. She suggested that I put him on a raw diet and insisted that the grain free kibble was far too rich for a puppy.
I cringed at the hassle and expense of the raw diet, so I put him on a kibble that was still high quality, but less rich and had some grain in it. Within two weeks half of my handsome little puppies face went bald! Raw it is. I began feeding ground commercially prepared raw diet and found it to be very expensive. There is also no chewing involved whatsoever with the ground diet which concerned me about dental disease. So I contacted all of the places where I got my raw meaty bones from in the Calgary area back in 2000 and feeding raw once again became affordable. I also put my 8 year old Australian Shepherd (who grew up on a raw diet but had been fed kibble for the last 6 years) onto the diet. The difference in her teeth was unbelievable! She went from having VERY stinky “dog breath” and some pretty brown gross looking teeth, to pearly white puppy teeth in a matter of just a couple of weeks! I was convinced. However feeding a raw diet was just as much of a hassle as it was before. I thought it would be really nice if someone would bag and deliver all these RMB’s for me. Then it dawned on me that I could do this for other people and make feeding a biologically appropriate diet easy and affordable for everyone.
At Back to Basics Raw Pet Food our goal is to make feeding a raw diet more realistic for everyone. The need for a more affordable way to feed raw has been apparent to us for quite a while. Our Dogs have been eating raw for several years, we are big believers in raw meaty bones. You also need to make sure that the diet has everything the dog or cat needs, like organs, extra muscle meat and fat, ground fruit and veggies etc. The raw pet food industry has been booming over the last 10 years and I have occasionally used pre-packaged raw to fill in the gaps, however there is nothing designed to compliment a diet based on raw meaty bones. With two large dogs, feeding a pre-packaged raw diet has just never been affordable. The need for an affordable solution to kibble is apparent; you can cut the cost of pre-packaged raw by about 30%. Simply by feeding raw meaty bones with a balancer that has all the other necessary ingredients to fill in the gaps. By delivering the food the need for a great amount of freezer space is reduced. The main reasons people do not feed raw are inconvenience, affordability and freezer space. We hope that we can help make feeding raw more realistic.
